As the shockwave... by: Courtney Sharp
As the shockwave of the
Boston Marathon tragedy continues to ripple across the nation, Good
Samaritan’s, (Bostonians and non-Bostonians alike), are responding quickly to
pour out their love on all those affected. In less than 48 hours since the bomb
exploded at the finish line, helpers infiltrated Boston to be a part of the movement dedicated to
serving the survivors, apart from the
fear of a second attack or a retaliatory bombing. Leaving their fear behind,
these helpers have made their services, resources, and homes available to the
survivors in the most heartwarming of ways. The Lutheran Church Charities of
Addison, IL have deployed therapy dogs to play and give free cuddles to those
in need. According to the Washington Post, over 8000 volunteers have come
forward to host runners and their families in and around the Boston area while
they recover.
In
tragic times as these, when the news is inundated with horrific images and
heartbreaking stories, Mr. Roger’s (yes, from Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood) offers
some appropriately timed advice that his mom would give him when the news was
dark and scary: “Look for the helpers. You will always find people helping.”
Today, I am thankful that we don’t have to look very hard to find all the
helpers on the news after this tragedy, and reminded that it is always an
option to be a helper yourself.
Larry
Rice and our team offer our deepest condolences to those affected by the Boston
Marathon.

As I reflect... by: Jennifer Biknell
As I reflect on my first days as a new law clerk it occurs to me how little I actually know after a year in law school. Instead of dwelling on what I do not know, however, I will focus on a few of the things I learned in my first days at Rice, Amundsen and Caperton. First, write everything down; as soon as you do not do that you will come to a point where you desperately wish you had. Second, keeping track of time is hard; is seems like it would be easy, but it is not. Third, there probably are stupid questions but ask them anyway; it is the difference between sounding foolish and proving it with foolish mistakes. Fourth, there are a lot of names here that start with "J" or end in some derivative of the "y" sound. But besides these things there is one thing I really would like to know and that is: How do I make the copier three-hole punch my copies?
