Clerking at Rice Law

The Story of How Law Students Become Lawyers

Law school makes law students. Law practice makes lawyers. Somewhere between the two is a law clerk. As a law clerk, you will continue to learn in the classroom, but it is tempered with real world experience. We put a great deal of effort in training our law clerks to become lawyers. They may become great lawyers and benefit our profession. They may even stay and be a part of our team for years or, possibly, for life. My office recently hired three law clerks. This series will give you a window into their development as law clerks and it will give them a record of their journey. Read and enjoy their trip. You never know, you may want to be a lawyer one day. If you are already a lawyer, you may teach law students to be lawyers. It is my hope that you will find some insight through their words.

Memphis Divorce Attorney Larry Rice: on Divorce Trial in Tennessee

Memphis Divorce Attorney Larry Rice discusses the divorce trial process. You have gone through the entire divorce process and things couldn't get resolved, so you have made it to the last and worst step. Mr. Rice emphasizes on the importance of telling the truth. Tell your lawyer everything from the very beginning. Telling the truth makes it much easier. Tell the court the truth because it will probably come out anyways and will destroy your lives about one thing and destroy the truth your telling about everything else... so, tell the truth. Mr. Rice informs you on how to prepare for trial. We don't know what the Judge is going to do until the Judge does it, and then sometimes we still do not know what the Judge is going to do. So, if you have your case tried, work with your lawyer, tell the truth, and realize the system isn't always perfect. Judges are trying to do what they think are right.

New Clerks, Associates, and Paralegals: Training Classes

Law schools do a great job of teaching abstract concepts, but a poor job of making lawyers.

The history of law clerks in our firm goes back to the days of when Larry Rice worked at firm during high school. Back to the days when the Beatles had just come to America.

We have come a long way since then. Law clerks, new associates, and new paralegals receive “The Secret Rites & Rituals of the Rice Team”, which is a straight forward guide to what really happens in the office and three (3) training classes on divorce law, divorce procedure, and office procedures. They also receive Tennessee Rules of Civil Procedure, Tennessee Rules of Evidence, Local rules of the Circuit and Chancery Courts and the Child Support Guidelines.
These make up the Law Clerk Bible.

With instructions, advise, experience and the bible over the next two years will transform 1L law students to lawyers.

These lawyers will be ready to help clients, negotiate settlements, resolve mediation and win at court.

With this in mind we welcome Carla Rogers, Jan Lentz, Blair Beaty, Chelsea Conn, and Zoe Sams to our firm.
